Why CF Americas
Mission
We are a non-profit (501c3) dedicated to providing medicine, equipment, education and hope to children
and families coping with the ravages of Cystic Fibrosis in Central America and the Caribbean.
Background
CF Americas began as the private effort of five professional associates to help a single Costa Rican child to obtain front line medications and treatment in his fight against Cystic Fibrosis. The success of these efforts brought an invitation to bring a small team of medical professionals to Costa Rica to see what could be done for all of the children who are diagnosed with CF.
The socialized medical system in Costa Rica provided adequate episodic care for these patients, but little or no preventive care was available due to resource limitations. In the past 12 years, this private effort has worked with corporate partners to deliver more than 6 million dollars of free medication and equipment to Costa Rica, improving the health and increasing the life span of 140 children.
We recently made an exploratory medical mission to the Dominican Republic, delivering an initial shipment of supplies to begin a long term effort there to serve the 115 children diagnosed with CF.
Program
We partner with companies that develop and market products that treat Cystic Fibrosis. This relationship allows us access to overstock, expiring and donated goods, with a tax benefit for our partners. We transport it to family associations and hospitals in Central America for distribution to children suffering with CF.
Goal
Our goal is to provide an example of quality care for CF children through medications, equipment and training. We strive to encourage the local medical community in providing a sustainable program of long term supportive care.
